New Liga Portugal market values: Gyökeres most valuable, whilst Di Maria & Edwards drop
This Friday, Transfermarkt updated the market values of players in the Portuguese League in what is the final update before the end of the season, and the first since last December’s update. Among the biggest changes, there is a new increase in the market value of one of Europe’s most wanted strikers: Viktor Gyökeres. The 25-year-old Swede continues to be in top form for Sporting, scoring 32 goals and registering 11 assists in 35 games in the 2023/24 season - which is why his market value has risen again; this time to €55 million.
That makes the striker the new most valuable footballer in the Liga Portugal out on his own. He was already the joint most valuable even before the update, with a market value of €45m drawing alongside Benfica duo João Neves and António Silva, and Porto keeper Diogo Costa. Gyökeres' impact in Portugal has been huge: when he was signed from Championship club Coventry City last summer for €21m, his market value was just €13m. Since then, his price has increased by €42m, which is, to this day, the third biggest increase the world has seen this season. Top Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with a summer move for Gyökeres. Sticking with Sporting, and former Wolves and Barcelona winger Francisco Trincão, whose performance levels have improved greatly since the turn of the year, also increased his market value to €14m.
However, the biggest market value increase in this update didn't not come from the capital Lisbon, but from a player from the city to the north, Porto. Argentine midfielder Alan Varela has established himself as a key player in Porto's midfield this season, and sees his market value sky-rocket by €11m, to take his new value to €25m. The midfielder has played 20 games in the Portuguese League, scoring two goals and providing two assists from midfield. Another Porto player to gain a huge increase in this update is Otávio Ataíde. The Brazilian defender, at just 21 years of age, rises from a market value of €3m to €10m. Brazilian striker Evanilson (+€5m to €30m MV), 21-year-old winger Francisco Conceição (+€5m to €15m MV), and Wenderson Galeno (+€3m to €25m MV), who scored a wondergoal against Arsenal in the Champions League last month, also had their market values increased.
Downgrades
Conversely, among the footballers who suffered the biggest downgrades, Sporting’s English winger Marcus Edwards saw his market value decrease from €28m down to €25m, having lost his space in Amorim's starting lineup to Trincão in recent months. Former West Ham midfielder, now of Benfica, João Mário also saw his market value decrease by €3m to take his latest value to €6m.
Another downgrade that deserves to be highlighted is that of Argentine World Cup winner Ángel Di María. The former Manchester United winger has proven to be a very important player at Benfica since returning to the club, having already scored eight goals and made seven assists in the Portuguese League, but the fact that he turned 36 in February meant that his price has now dropped from €5m to €4m.
Most valuable squads in Portuguese league
Although no players increased in value in the most recent update from the squad of Benfica, with its total squad market value being downgraded by €5m, the former European Cup winners continue to have the most valuable squad in Portuguese football, with a total market value of €360.75m. The Sporting squad gained the most value, going up an additional €27m in valuation, leaving them now priced at €329.28m. Whilst Porto's value also rises by €26.5m, giving their squad a total market value of €293.6m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
